Don’t tweet and drive, tweetcall.

New applications continue to evolve for the Twitterverse. When doing a bit of research for this blog post I was surprised and impressed with the amount of apps I came across on the Twitter Fan Wikipage. The latest app being tweetcall. Yes, you guessed it. This app allows you to call in your tweets to avoid multi-tasking and driving. A post on gadgetell.com by JG Mason gives a run down of how it works.

Tweetcall is directed toward non-technical tweeters and users that don’t want to pay for text message tweets. It works in the same way, call in and state “What’s on your mind” in 140 characters or less. But as  Mason states in Twitter without all that annoying typing: Tweetcall, what if your Tweet isn’t translated correctly? The example he gives:

What if I say, “I am booking in Times Square on my wheels,” but what gets transcribed from voice to text is “I am hooking in Times Square in high heels.”  Embarrassing, right?  Worry not, TweetCall uses voice recognition technology developed by Quicktate which is a “highly accurate transcription service, which uses humans to proofread all messages for proper syntax, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation before they are submitted.”

A good idea that opens Twitter up to a different demographic. I’m curious to see if this app is utilized. What are your thoughts and is this something you would try out? The other aspect of Tweetcall is how it adds audio to your Twitter feed.  The phone number is toll free but it makes me wonder how the creator of Tweetcall profits. So if you have answers let me know.

  1. Haha, wow, Twitter is making serious moves. This is a very cool post (I’ve never heard of it before) but is Tweetcall really necessary? If you’re that busy/lazy where you absolutely cannot post less than 140 characters, you should live a Twitter-free life.

    A lot of people do post very insightful information and great links, but too many use it as a simpler version of what we know as updating our Facebook status. I’m sorry but no one cares if you’re going out with your baby. Don’t get me wrong, my posts are never useful but that’s just it…Twitter isn’t [to me] as ‘essential’ as Facebook yet.

    Who knows, maybe this will catch on like crazy and it could probably eliminate some of the stupid updates. After all, I’d be a little embarrassed to say, “I’m really hungover” into a phone and wait for it to post.

  2. I have no idea how that would profit, but it seems like that’s the natural progression of things these days. The concept of being able to look up anything you might possible need to know on Google has turned into a phone number you can call any time of day to ask a question and get the answer delivered in a text. As convenient as the web is, it just leaves us to find a new way to make life easier. I bet in the next few months there will be an audio tweet option where we can all listen to each other speak our tweets!

  3. This service has convinced me that people have now taken this addiction of tweeting into a full blown obsession. It seems to me that there are not enough people who are involved with Twitter who do not want to type in 140 characters (and if there are, then that is just a sad depiction of how lazy our society is) prompting me to believe that this is for use of people who are not in a position to type something out (driving, bathing, etc.). Can people really not wait to inform people about what they are doing? The only logical application that I can see for this service is if someone is in a horrible car accident that restrains both of their arms and their phone somehow manages to land by their head calling the tweetcall phone number, allowing the victim to tweet the location of their car accident are request emergency care. But what are the chances of that?

  4. Wow! Twitter is doing everything now from being completely hands free to saving lives (the Demi Moore situation). Twitter has become a internet obsession that had to create a way for its fanatic users to tweet even when they are driving down the free way. I have a feeling that this will be a hot tool for those that tweet every 2 minutes, but for those that use it as a way to exchange information, links, and work related topics it may not catch on so quickly if ever. I’m not sure how they would profit from this, but isn’t twitter also a non- profit site as of right now?

  5. Great article. I really am amazed how fast technology is adapting and expanding. For twitter to already have an app to allow consumers to safely while driving is really something. It was just a couple months ago where I was first introduced to Twitter and now all everyone talks about is twitter. Interesting point about the possibility of audio tweets in the above comment.

  6. So jsaxarra and kbergeron44 not fans of Tweetcall. You should see some of the other ridiculous apps that are offered, I don’t think Tweetcall can even compare to some of the ones out there. But I do agree that talking into a phone while waiting for your tweet update is a funny visual. As for the car accident I don’t think the chances are very likely of that happening.

    I didn’t hear about the Demi Moore, life saving situation. What happenend? And yes Twitter as of now doesn’t profit in any way.

    I guess all we can do is sit back and see what happens next with Twitter, it won’t be long. It’s a work in progess.

  7. I actually saw this on the news. It’s extremely interesting how far we have come with our social media networks in such a short time. I don’t think I would actually use this application however, you never know when this could come in handy for some special situation. It does seem a bit lazy to call in. However, if your phone does not have the internet, you are not near a computer and are in desperate need of a tweet, I guess it is acceptable.

  8. Very true Libby. I can’t imagine myself calling in to tweet either and the other dilemma is posting links. I guess if you call in that isn’t an option…
